I am currently a BJCP Grand Master VIII judge, the second highest ranked judge as only Gordon Strong has a higher judge rank. I have been involved with the BJCP exam grading process since 1999 and have been one of the Exam Directors since 2004. As we worked to clarify the exam process and questions I generated the system used to automate the generation of the actual questions used in the individual beer and mead essay exams for each site. When the Beer Entrance Exam (online exam) was introduced in 2012, I pushed to convert the mead exam to work the same way. Ultimately, I generated virtually all the questions used in the current BJCP Mead Entrance Exam. I administered the first BJCP exam in given in South America back in 2009 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I brew beer, make mead and occasionally make a cider or wine. I’ve won my share of medals for beers and meads in competitions and have won a number of overall Best-of-Show in competitions. I was the 2008 American Homebrewers Association Mead Maker of the Year. I am the author of The Complete Guide to Making Mead. I’ve had articles published in both Brew Your Own and Zymurgy magazines. I’ve traveled extensively to beer related destinations in Europe and North America.
